All Mountain Skis

Should be in-between nose and top of head for sizing.

Something that would make it easier for the children to maneuver through the powder or crud.

Only recommended for our off-piste skiing, as careful as we are with the kids, accidents are inevitable on the mountain and we’d rather not have that accident on a pair of nice race skis!

MIPS Certified Helmet

Most helmets nowadays are MIPS certified, it is the industry standard. Just look for the yellow label on your children’s helmets.

Goggles that are compatible with helmet (no goggle gap)

Not only do the goggle gaps look a little goofy, they are actually very dangerous if the skier falls face first. If their forehead is exposed, the ground could make direct contact with their head instead of the helmet. So make sure you have proper fitting goggles/helmet especially with a balaclava/buff.

If unsure, brands are compatible with each other. So if you have a Smith helmet, Smith Goggles would work perfect! You can also bring your helmet to the shop while trying new goggles to make sure they fit properly.

Proper Ski Boots

The ski boot is the most important piece of equipment for any skier.

Make sure you get a boot with the proper fit/flex. If you are unsure, visit your local ski shop to get an experts advice and make sure the expert knows the child is in a ski racing program and should aim for a race boot/fit.

Other Recommended Equipment

  • Appropriate sized poles!

    • Flip pole upside down, hold pole directly under basket, if your arm makes a perfect right angle, the poles are the perfect size for racers!
    • Touring poles can work too, since you can change the size easily. This isn’t normally recommended on a race team but Lake Louise Ski Resort calls for it!
  • Quality under-jacket the children can wear under the Blackdogs Jacket

    • Doesn’t have to be anything too puffy, just an extra layer for them. Make sure they can still zip their outer jacket all the way up still!
  • Shin Guards once the child has made enough progression. Your coach will
personally recommend when it is time to purchase them.

  • Spine Protector
  • Proper Ski Socks
  • Snowpants
  • Warm Gloves/Mittens

    • Handwarmers Daily!
  • Buffs/Balaclavas Daily

    • Always, always pack extra Buffs/Balaclavas!
  • Appropriate Under Layers

    • Merino 200-250+
